• As the name implies, this veil hangs down to the bride's fingertips. It can be made of one layer or several layers and trimmed with lace or ribbons.

Three-Quarter Length

• This veil is also called the waltz or ballerina veil because it falls somewhere between the bride's knees and her ankles. It may be made of plain tulle or lined with satin.

Cathedral

• A cathedral-length veil is the most formal. It trails down the bride's back and onto the floor behind her. Cathedral-length veils are usually worn with cathedral-length gowns, which have trains.

Lifting of the veil was often a part of the ancient wedding ritual, symbolizing the groom taking possession of his wife. It could have been either as his lover or as property, or for the parents to reveal the bride for his approval.

White weddings became most common during the prosperous period after World War II. A white dress and veil demonstrated that the bride and her family could afford the best and fanciest wedding.
