A woman is likely to wear a bridal veil on her wedding day if she follows the traditions of a white wedding. Brides used to wear their hair flowing down their back at their wedding to symbolize their virginity. Today things are a little less formal, and most brides choose their veils for fashion more than ritual significance. You can make your own wedding veil or buy one.
Styles of Wedding Veils
Blusher
• The blusher veil is usually worn in tandem with another veil. It is a shoulder-length veil that hangs over the face during the wedding ceremony and is lifted by the groom when it is time for him to kiss his bride.
Birdcage
• A birdcage veil is very short, usually just covering the eyes. It is often made of coarse diamond-shaped mesh and is worn attached to a hat or a hair ornament.
Mantilla
• A mantilla, or Spanish veil, is worn draped over the head like a scarf. It is usually made of lace and is fastened to the hair with combs or bobby pins.
Shoulder Length
• A flyaway veil is shoulder-length and is usually made up of many different layers. A fountain veil is also shoulder-length, but it is worn gathered at the top of the head for fullness and a "cascade" effect.
Fingertip
• As the name implies, this veil hangs down to the bride's fingertips. It can be made of one layer or several layers and trimmed with lace or ribbons.
Three-Quarter Length
• This veil is also called the waltz or ballerina veil because it falls somewhere between the bride's knees and her ankles. It may be made of plain tulle or lined with satin.
Cathedral
• A cathedral-length veil is the most formal. It trails down the bride's back and onto the floor behind her. Cathedral-length veils are usually worn with cathedral-length gowns, which have trains.
Lifting of the veil was often a part of the ancient wedding ritual, symbolizing the groom taking possession of his wife. It could have been either as his lover or as property, or for the parents to reveal the bride for his approval.
White weddings became most common during the prosperous period after World War II. A white dress and veil demonstrated that the bride and her family could afford the best and fanciest wedding.
Today, cheap wedding veils along with cheap bridal gowns are plentiful. A white wedding is no longer a sign of being wealthy. A wedding gown can be bought for $99 and up.
