Becoming a Christian Wife

Becoming a Christian wife is a continual process. When we say “I do”, that is just the beginning. Much like when we accept Christ as our savior. We begin as a babe in Christ; we grow by being fed from the Word of God. All avenues of Christianity are like that… roads that we must travel and practice God’s teachings along the way. We are never “finished” growing as a Christian as long as we live. There is always more to learn, more to improve on. That’s the way it is in marriage. As long as we let him, God will continue to teach us to grow as a Christian wife. This, too, happens by being fed from the Word of God.

God’s design of marriage seems to be a plan to allow us to become more like Jesus. Our role as a wife to our earthly husband parallels the role of the church as the bride of Christ. In Ephesians 5:23-24 He says, ‘For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing’. So, in order to be Christian wife, we must need to go to church. How else can we learn the relationship between Jesus and the church? A wife can learn how to be submissive to her husband by learning how the church submits to Christ.

The role of our earthly husband parallels that of Christ to the church; a Christian husband is to love his wife enough to sacrifice himself for her. A Christian wife would gladly submit to the leadership of a husband that embraced her in that kind of warm sacrificial love. Ephesians 5:25-30 says ‘Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.’ He continues to say the wife is to be sanctified and cleansed with washing of water by the word; she is to be presented without ‘spot or wrinkle’, holy and without blemish. Jesus gave his life for us that our sins would be covered in his blood, therefore cleansing us for himself that we may join him in heaven. The wife is to be clean, a virgin, when she is presented to her husband. The husband is to love his wife as he loves his own body just as the Lord loves the church.

‘For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.’ Ephesians 5:31-33. We are to leave our mother and father and join our spouse and become one flesh. When Jesus comes again, God will make clear what is now a mystery concerning Christ and the church and becoming one flesh. God points out that every husband should love his wife as himself; and every wife reverence her husband. He is preparing us on earth for the way it will be in heaven; how Christ loves us and how we are to reverence Him. What a glorious day it will be when we enter the heavenly kingdom of Christ!
