Step 1 Look through samples of wedding stationary to get a feel for what you like and don't like about their designs. Seeing wedding stationary that you like may be a helpful inspiration for your own design. Step 2 Determine your wedding's style. This will help determine which fonts, illustrations, and type of paper you should use to make your own wedding invitations. For example, the invitation to a beach wedding may be more informal than one for a black-tie wedding. Step 3 Decide what size you would like your wedding invitation to be. Popular paper sizes include A7 (5 inches by 7 inches) or #10 (3.875 inches by 9.25 inches) for invitations and 4 bar (3.5 inches by 4.875 inches) for response cards. Step 4 Make your own wedding invitations by first developing a color scheme. These colors will be used in your fonts and graphic elements, and may also influence your paper and envelope color choices. Step 5 Use a graphic design software program such as Print Artist, Print Master or Microsoft Word to design your wedding stationary. To embellish your design, consider using free wedding clip-art or royalty free art. Step 6 Choose a font style for your wedding stationary. Graphic design software such as Print Artist or Print Master and Microsoft Word come with a wide variety of fonts. You should easily be able to make your own wedding invitations with these fonts. If not, you may opt to buy new fonts or search online for free fonts if none that you have appeal to you. Step 7 Determine whether you will include a separate information or reception card with your invitation, and if you expect to receive RSVPs by mail, be sure to design a response card that includes space for the names of guests and the preferred entree if appropriate. Step 8 Proofread your wedding stationary. Also enlist a friend to help proofread; what looks perfectly correct to you may in fact contain a misspelling or a missed word. Step 9 Choose the paper and envelopes you want to use to make your own wedding stationary. Look for heavier cover weight papers to make your invitations. You may opt for a lighter weight paper for the information and response cards. Choose matching envelopes for mailing. You can also find matching sets of printable wedding invitations. Step 10 Use a good quality ink jet or laser printer to print your wedding invitations. Check your ink levels before you start. Print one test invitation to make sure everything prints to your specifications. When you know your font, color and design are exactly as you want, print your invitations. TIPS: • When deciding on your font set, try to limit yourself to no more than three different fonts. This will ensure that the pieces of your wedding stationary tie together and makes for a cleaner and less-confused graphic design. • Decide whether to add embellishments to your wedding stationary. For example, you may want to add a vellum overlay by punching two holes in the top of the vellum and invitation and tie together with a decorative ribbon or sash. • Do not wait until the last minute to make your own wedding invitations. Ideally, you should have your invitations ready at least two months prior to your wedding date to allow time for addressing and mailing them out.
