There are thousands of wedding cake designs available to choose from, so how do you decide which one is just right for your wedding? Wedding cakes come in different shapes, sizes and flavors. They can be decorated with icing or fondant, with flowers and other decorations made of the same. Or arrangements of artificial or fresh flowers can adorn your cake. Then it can be topped with any one of a huge assortment of wedding cake toppers.
Your wedding theme offers many ideas for your cake design, try one that reflects an interest, hobby or passion that you share as a couple. This is a great way to set your wedding apart from the rest and make a lasting impression.
Once you have settled on your dream wedding cake, then it’s time to hit the bakeries. Meet with several bakers and ask to see examples of their work. Try several flavors of cake and decide on what you like. If you want a special flavor that is your favorite, ask to try their version. Talk to them about your idea and show them a picture of what you want and see how willing they are to work with you.
Ask About Delivery and Setup!
Then, last but not least, ask about delivery and set up of your cake. This can be as important as the cake itself. Will they provide the stand or base for the cake to sit on? Believe it or not, this happened at the last wedding I coordinated.
The cake was delivered at the right time, but when stacked, the delivery people asked what it was supposed to sit on. They turned one of the crystal food trays upside down and sat the cake on it. It worked, but the bride was unaware that she was to provide the cake stand!
The bride had also specifically asked for each layer to have a ribbon around the base of each cake. Instead, the decorator piped icing around each cake. So if your wedding cake design is important to you, and I know that it is, remember to ask all of these important questions!
