Make a Wedding Ceiling Canopy

Make your own wedding ceiling canopy. Save hundreds of dollars and provide a beautiful atmosphere for your wedding reception!

1. Measure the ceiling of the room where you plan to use the canopy. The canopy doesn't have to cover the entire ceiling, you could make a smaller canopy over one section of the ceiling of a large room. Use whatever works for you.

2. Choose any cheap light-weight fabric that you want to use in any color you prefer (tulle, sinamay mesh or organza work well). Decide where the center point of the canopy will be. Cut 8 panels of fabric 10 to 20% longer than the length needed so the fabric will "droop". Example: If the room is 30x30 feet, you will need the panels to be about 15 feet, roughly half of the distance from the center to the outer perimeter. 15 x 20% = 3 so add 3 feet and cut the fabric in 18 feet lengths. (Cut longer if you want more droop.)

3.You will need an eye bolt to screw into a secure spot in the ceiling, strong fishing line (20lb. weight test or more) and a 12 to 18 inch hoop (an embroidery hoop will work well).

4. Fold over 2 inches of one end of each panel and sew across panel leaving an opening big enough to thread the hoop into. You can use fabric glue or iron on adhesive strips if you prefer. After all panels are on the hoop, secure the ends of the hoop so panels don’t slide off.

5. Cut 7 pieces of fishing line in equal lengths - tie one end to “S” hook and other end to the hoop between each panel, spacing equally. Hang the “S” hook onto the eye bolt. If eye bolt will damage the ceiling, hang the hoop with the “S” hook onto a secure fixture already on the ceiling.

6.Measure 15 feet from the hoop to the outer perimeter of the room. Loosely spread the end of the fabric and tack each corner of the fabric to the ceiling with clear thumb tacks. Repeat this with the rest of the panels.

These instructions make a round canopy. If you want to cover an entire rectangle ceiling, you can adjust the length of some of the panels so they reach the corners of the ceiling and the wall.

You can use lighting to finish the look by adding strings of clear or colored lights in or between the panels, put colored light bulbs in ceiling fixtures or place lamps or other light sources with colored bulbs around the room aiming the light at the canopy. If you want the panels to continue to drape down the wall to the floor, just measure the height of the wall and add the appropriate length of fabric. This would look spectacular with strings of lights behind the fabric on the walls.

You could also hang crystals or metallic streamers from the ceiling to reflect the light. Use your imagination to create your custom wedding ceiling canopy and enjoy the total transformation that you've given to your reception venue!
