Fresh or Silk?

The first thing you will need to do is decide if you are using fresh or silk wedding flowers.

There is nothing quite like fresh flowers at a wedding, but you have a very short time-line to get them ready. There are many places that you can find fresh flowers. You can order them online as well as get them through local grocery stores, nurseries or flower shops.

Plan on keeping your fresh flowers refrigerated in order to maintain freshness. You will need to have a number of large buckets available to keep flowers in water with floral preservative. Using tall plastic buckets usually available at any home improvement store will insure that your flowers will last.

Silk wedding flowers are a beautiful choice and work well with your time schedule. Silk wedding flowers can be purchased online or at local craft stores. Silks come in a wide variety of colors that can suit any wedding color choice. You CAN accomplish making your own wedding flower arrangements - whichever type you choose. It's all about the planning!

How Many?

Next you will need to know how many corsages, boutonnieres, bouquets and wedding flower arrangements you will need. Use the wedding flower worksheet in “My Christian Wedding Planner”. Go to the church and reception hall and plan where you want arrangements to be placed. Decide on the size each needs to be, i.e., the height and width. Determine approximately how many and what kind of flowers you are going to need. You will also need to know how much, the width, color and type of ribbon needed to complete each project. There are many books and magazines in which to get floral ideas and instructions besides the "how to" resources you can find on the internet.

You can borrow or use your own vases or inexpensive glass cylinders for tall arrangements, and baskets or other containers of your choice for your other wedding flower arrangements. You may want to use ferns or green plants of some sort also. You can usually rent these from local nurseries or you may know someone who has some you can use. If you need an arch, candelabras, fern stands or columns, check with local craft stores, nurseries and flower or wedding rental shops to rent them.

Gather Supplies

For fresh flowers you will need to include gloves, rose strippers if using a lot fresh roses, a sharp paring knife, scissors, a pair of wire cutters, floral wire, floral tape, oasis and floral preservatives along with boutonniere pins, corsage pins, and ribbon.

For silk flowers you will need gloves, scissors, a pair of wire cutters, floral wire, floral tape, floral foam, hot glue gun or pot, glue, along with floral picks, boutonniere pins, corsage pins, and ribbon. You can find all of these supplies along with silk wedding flowers and instruction books online or at local craft stores.

Collect the floral supplies you will need and put them together in a container to keep them organized.

TIP: Use 3m Command Adhesive Hooks and Hangers to hang pew bows and other decorations. They even work on brick and rough services and don’t damage the surface.

Finishing Up

Do as much as you can ahead of time. Make bows, collect vases and candles, print wedding programs and put together wedding favors several weeks ahead of time. Silk wedding flowers can be arranged anytime well in advance of your wedding. Fresh flower arrangements should be started no more than two days prior to you wedding. Get help from your friends, neighbors and anyone else who you can trust to help you make your wedding flower arrangements.

All of the flowers in the photos on this page are silk.
