Wedding Program Fan

A homemade wedding program fan is a great cheap wedding idea for a summer wedding. There are so many shapes you can use for the fan. I recently coordinated a wedding where we used a scroll shape for their wedding program fans. I printed them on my computer, then we had a fan making party and they turned out great! The cost was less than a dollar each.

You can use almost any shape for your fan, and you can make them with or without sticks for handles. The scrolls needed sticks, but some shapes are better without handles such as the Asian fan.

Below are the directions for the homemade scroll fan.

MATERIALS:
110 lb. cardstock
double sided tape
sharp scissors
12-13 inch paint sticks
spray paint
ribbon
scroll outline in pdf format

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. You will need 2 pieces of cardstock for each fan (a front and a back) in the color of your choice.
2. 1 paint stick for each fan as the handle, paint desired color.
3. Print or copy desired shape onto each piece of cardstock.
4. Print wedding program inside shape outline, print backside if desired.
5. Carefully cut out shapes leaving outline on edge of shape.
6. Tape stick to inside center of fan back with top of stick just below top edge of fan. There should be 4 – 5 inches remaining for handle.
7. Run a strip of tape along edges of same fan back.
8. Carefully align front side of fan with back and press together.
9. Tie a small bow with about 15 inches of ribbon just below the edge of the fan around stick.

First, save the scroll outline to a word processor. Microsoft Word is where I made it. I printed the scrolls on the ivory cardstock. Then I used Print Shop or Print Artist to print the fleur de lis inside the scroll on the fronts of the fans. Last, I printed the wording using Word 2007. It would be much easier to use one program to design your fan. I had to align the fleur de lis picture inside the scroll by measuring and reprinting until I got it right.

I cut out the fans and painted the handles gold in advance. Then we had a Bride’s Fan Party to put the fans together in an assembly line fashion. It worked great with 4 people; me, the mother of the bride, the bride and one bridesmaid making 125 fans. It took about 8-9 rolls of double sided tape to make them. You could use spray adhesive instead, but I think it would be messy. The tape worked great, it just took more than we thought. The total cost of this project was about $60 not counting the printer ink.

You can use any shape that works as a fan; heart, oval, rectangle just to name a few. These shapes are also available in Microsoft Word 2007.

FIY: Use simple shapes to make cutting faster and easier!
